I have reviewed this Sibelius recording elsewhere in its DVD-Audio + 16 bit CD (2 Disc) package, and since this is price competitive with this Vanguard 20 bit SBM single CD re-issue and both CD versions are equally good sonically, I suggest investing in the Classic Records 2 Disc set. That is of course for the Sibelius Concerto and a splendid version of the Tapiola tone poem.
The combo of Tauno Hannikainen and Sibelius gives an expert from the composer's "mouth" authentic performance that avoids any drag in the central Adagio or mindless rush to the finish line in the final Allegro. The non pareil clarity of the 35 mm magnetic film recording process gives a wide soundstage with fantastic depth (one of the features of 35mm over 1/2 inch standard tape recording in the playback, clearly audible on Everest's later recordings after 1959 adopting the 35 mm process, is the added realism to instruments and tangible depth to the stereophonic sound picture creating a natural 3D effect) and this is faithfully reproduced by the DVD-A transfer.
Here, depending on your speaker/amp set up, you can obtain either full surround, front standard stereo in LR, or, most intriguingly, and never heard outside the original Belock mastering studio in Bayside, New York, or hear a three channel version exactly corresponding to the three tracks on the original master. In all of these cases you get an extremely wide dynamic range, a frequency range far beyond the CD versions and most importantly, because the sampling rate is so high, the extra detail produces a startling realism and life like sound. The violin is literally in front of you with the orchestra arranged behind and on either side. Moreover, this is a rock solid stereophonic image: once located there is no "drifting" of the violin or other instruments.
Of the CD versions, they approximate closer to the original audiophile vinyl first editions, with some restriction of the dynamics and the frequency range. The 20 bit SBM remastering undertook by Vanguard in the 1990s with Sony for the whole series, which restores the original art work (many cases the iconic Steinweiss who invented the modern LP cover) and helpful liner notes, has made this a highly collectible series, producing mostly sparkling results. But in some cases, the CD sound has been slightly veiled, and such is the case here.
The 16 bit standard CD version included by Classic Records to partner the fabulous "studio" sound of the DVD-A disc in their 2 disc package, is actually preferable here to this Vanguard CD. As I said, you may or may not get the chance to audition this performance in DVD-Audio but it is worthwhile having it just in case, along with the CD.
There is 1 or 2 seconds of tape stretch at the beginning as the mechanics of the original restored Westrex recorders commence playback, but I like this...it honestly shows nothing is being done to interfere with the original source. After that, you are in audiophile heaven.
The bad news is that this is probably the last set of releases likely to come from the Everest Records estate given the age and condition of the remaining film masters and half inch tapes. Seymour Solomon had wanted to re-release the entire Vanguard series in high quality sacd format, but only succeeded with the Applachian Spring before Vanguard ceased trading. As with my comments above concerning the dozen or so DVD-A Everest releases from Classic Records available, this SACD reveals the stunning quality of the original analog source. Simply the best out there.
So the choice is simple: go for the remarkably good Vanguard CD series, about 30 releases, in excellent 20 bit SBM sound. Or the Classics Records double disc sets about a dozen in all, comprising a DVD-A disc and a 16 bit CD. Helpfully a good DVD-Audio player will probably play SACD discs as well, or vice versa, so in search of the highest quality sound available you will want the SACD Appalachian Spring too. None of these performances are a let down, while many are stand out, and a few some of the greatest recordings ever made. Those into Jazz or the lighter side of the Everest catalogue might like to investigate the Empire Re releases, in similar stunning sound and carefully re-mastered, of such legendary greats as Charlie Barnet, Woody Herman, Ernie Wilkes and Charlie Shavers etc. as well as the one and only Gloria Lynne (compilation on Empire Re) virtually all her songs on Everest albums lovingly re-mastered by Freshsounds.
As for Tauno Hannikainen, there is more Sibelius from him on a very nice 2CD EMI Seraphim set, conducting Symphonies 2 and 5 (surely the most striking and accessible, even enjoyable?) alas with the lesser forces of the London Sinfonia, but very good they are too, in these leaner performances, coupled with Malcolm Sargent's glorious traversal of the overtures (a wonderful Karelia Suite!) and tone poems on the second disc, with the Vienna Philharmonic.
Spivakovsky, as the soloist in both the Sibelius and Tchaikovsky, has a straightforward, musical way with these works which largely eschews over-interpretation or indulgence in exaggerated intonation or tempi. He is closer to Heifitz than say Lin or Kavakos, with of course much better sound recording. It's therefore a shame we have not got a Stradivarius in his hands, nevertheless there is much beauty in his playing and approach which is without fault.
As a recording, this Sibelius Violin Concerto, taken in its entirety, is in my view the best available. The Tchaikovsky, though similarly well played and specified, faces a wider variation of competing interpretations which are equally successful. So in this case of the Tchaikovsky, personal preference and the emotional reach of the great violinists are more crucial and I could not place Spivakovsky ahead of the field, as one can do with the Sibelius.
