Praised by The Washington Post for playing with "an easy warmth, drawing the orchestra after him like a halo around a candle flame," cellist Kian Soltani follows his DG debut album, Home, with a Dvor k album centered on the famous cello concerto. Featuring Maestro Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin, the concerto is paired with five arrangements of beloved Dvor k pieces, three of which Soltani arranged himself.
A great performance of Dvorak’s Cello Concerto – one of the wonders of the world – should grab one by the maracas. This doesn’t. Part of it has to do with the self-effacing, polite nature of the soloist – all power to him. In attempting to understand why this endeavour is what it is, a comment made on my el cheapo review of Barenboim’s third Bruckner cycle comes to mind:
“Just listening to Danny Boy's live concert from Carnegie Hall... strange Mozart Sinfonia Concertante, many phrases lacking articulation and flabby, yet followed by a last movement so breathless and glib that the soloists had to rein him in... the Bruckner 7 is running now with a shapeless First movement, as D-Boy makes some indulgent gestures which halt any forward propulsion - not much arc to his concept; in a word, boring... time to switch channels and maybe find a nice movie, sorry.”
This is a bullseye. Here too, DB artificially whips up surface-excitement by his pedal-to-the-metal approach; on the other hand, brake-parachutes are deployed whenever “profundity” is evident in the score. What with all the pedagogy on offer, one might as well be back at school with Horshack, Epstein and Vinnie Barbarino. The finale in particular is a semi-boring, jumpy affair where tension is leached out in quieter passages or where the soloist has the stage to himself. At the end of all things, no apotheosis accrues in consequence. Have a listen – it just ain’t there. Not at all. Along the way, there are the usual flubs from the Berlin Staatskapelle (such as 1’27” in the first movement). I cannot hear anything special in the fillers – they sound like the proverbial sight-read. This tepid transcription of ‘Songs My Mother taught Me’ is no substitute for a Victoria de los ángeles singing her guts out. Yo-Yo Ma is preferable too if such a transcription is warranted.
All this can mean only one thing. Cherish Rostropovich and Karajan, ever-green, chronometers and slayers of time.
