Einojuhani Rautavaara is Finland’s best known composer, especially internationally. Rautavaara’s music has been described as a mixture of modernism and mystic romanticism – an attempt to define a compositional style that is unique, personal, and very hard to define. Among his finest works are 12 concertos, composed over the past four decades, and collected together in this 4-CD box on the Ondine label. Performers include violinist Elmar Oliveira, cellist Marko Ylonen, harpist Marielle Nordmann, organ player Kari Jussila, clarinetist Richard Stoltzman, and pianists Ralf Gothoni and Vladimir Ashkenazy.


This edition of 12 concertos by Einojuhani Rautavaara follows on the great success of the release of his eight symphonies, in a collectors' box set.

Ondine's long-time house composer is recognized as one of the greatest musical figures in Finland after Jean Sibelius. Between 1968 and 2001, he wrote solo works with orchestra for the violin, cello, double bass, harp, flute, clarinet, organ and the piano. Highlights include the Violin Concerto which won a Cannes Classical Award in 1998, the Concerto for Birds (on tape) and Orchestra "Cantus Arcticus" which remains Rautavaara's most popular and most frequently performed work of any kind, and the Third Piano Concerto "Gift of Dreams" which was commissioned, premiered and recorded by pianist-conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy. The list of featured star performers also includes Patrick Gallois (flute) and Richard Stoltzman (clarinet).

These recordings were produced in collaboration with the composer between 1991 and 2005 and have been previously released to international popular and critical acclaim. The soloists are:

The early compositions of the internationally renowned Finnish composer, Einojuhani Rautavaara, draw on the Nordic classicism of Sibelius and Nielsen, as well as the influences of Bartók, Shostakovich and folk music. Although, during the 1960s, Rautavaara experimented with avant-garde compositional techniques, the First Piano Concerto, written in 1969 , marked another significant turning point as the composer sought, in his own words, to evoke "the entire rich grandeur of the instrument." In the Second Piano Concerto of 1989, Rautavaara finds an intriguing accommodation between traditional and more radical elements. His Third Piano Concerto, written in 1998 for Vladimir Ashkenazy, is reminiscent of Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in its austere beauty.
