Wolf Hall is the most keenly anticipated BBC drama for 2015. Based on the Booker Prize-winning novels of Hilary Mantel its cast includes Mark Rylance, Damian Lewis, Claire Foy and Jonathan Pryce. The six part serial presents an intimate portrait of Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIIIs chief minister and confidante. Leading British film and TV composer Debbie Wiseman in her sixth collaboration with BAFTA Award winning director Peter Kosminsky has created a highly original score mixing Tudor instruments with modern to create the austere and vivid musical atmosphere of the time. Performed by the celebrated Locrian Ensemble Of London, Debbie says, "It's a huge privilege to have been asked to create the score for the drama adaptation of Hilary Mantel''s stunning novels. My aim was to create a musical world inspired by the vitality and elegance of the novels, and the vivid screenplay by Peter Straughan. Peter Kosminsky's powerful visual adaptation and Mark Rylance's mesmerising performance as Thomas Cromwell have been a huge inspiration throughout the composing process." Description
Where others have failed, Thomas Cromwell, the son of a humble blacksmith, delivers Henry VIII’s fervent desire to marry Anne Boleyn. But if Anne disappoints Henry, will Cromwell retain the King’s favour? Desperate for a male heir, Henry VIII wishes to have his marriage to Katherine of Aragon annulled. When Cardinal Wolsey fails to deliver this annulment, he is dismissed as Lord Chancellor and forced to flee his palace at York Place. The Cardinal’s sole hope of returning to the King’s favour lies in the ever-loyal Thomas Cromwell. As he departs for the north, the Cardinal urges Cromwell to find a way to get close to Anne Boleyn for she is the key to persuading the King to restore him. The King starts to take notice of Cromwell, appreciating his loyalty to the Cardinal and the honest and open way Cromwell talks to him. But then news from the north - the Cardinal has been arrested for treason and has died on the journey back to London. Cromwell swears vengeance on those that brought down the Cardinal. Cromwell becomes relied on more and more in the running of the King’s affairs. He manoeuvres a Bill through Parliament acknowledging Henry rather than the Pope as head of the Church of England, the first step in enabling Henry to marry Anne Boleyn. But when Anne gives birth to a baby girl, Elizabeth, Henry does little to hide his disappointment. Until Henry has a male heir, the Tudor line remains vulnerable. When Anne miscarries, Henry fears that he will never have a son with her, convinced that she is cursed and that he was tricked into marriage by her. Sensing her loss of favour, the Queen’s enemies gather and rumours of her infidelity spread. As Cromwell sets the judicial wheels in motion, he thinks back to Cardinal Wolsey’s demise and extracts the ultimate revenge.

Debbie Wiseman MBE (born 10 May 1963) is a British composer for film and television, known also as a conductor and a radio and television presenter. One of the UK's most successful female music ambassadors.
One of the UK’s most successful female music ambassadors, Debbie is in demand not only as a composer, but also as a conductor and presenter.
Throughout the past 20 years, there are probably few people in the UK who have not heard a theme from one of Debbie’s films or shows. Whether it is watching Step[hen Fry bring to life Oscar Wilde for the big screen, hearing the latest political commentary on a Sunday morning with Andrew Marr, or poring over T.S.Eliot’s love story in the Oscar nominated “Tom & Viv”, Wiseman has gifted us iconic themes of beauty and passion, love and laughter.
Her credits, over 200 of them, for the big and small screen include FLOOD, WARRIORS, THE WHALE, FATHER BROWN, FRY’S PLANET WORD, JUDGE JOHN DEED, WILDE, OTHELLO, LAND GIRLS, JOANNA LUMLEY’S GREEK ODYSSEY, TOM & VIV, JEKYLL, THE PASSION, THE GUILTY, BEFORE YOU GO, ARSENE LUPIN, HE KNEW HE WAS RIGHT, TOM’S MIDNIGHT GARDEN, LOST CHRISTMAS, WPC 56 and THE PROMISE.
Debbie has been nominated for two Ivor Novello Awards for WILDE and DEATH OF YUGOSLAVIA, and has won a TRIC Award for THE GOOD GUYS and an RTS Award for WARRIORS. In 2007 she was awarded the Gold Badge of Merit by the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters.
Debbie is a Visiting Professor at the Royal College of Music, and regularly gives lectures to schools and colleges about the art of composing music for picture. In 2008 she composed a new “Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra” called “Different Voices” which was premiered by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as part of their 60th birthday celebrations, and the work is now frequently performed by school and youth orchestras across the country. Her album of music to accompany the fairy stories of Oscar Wilde – WILDE STORIES - on the Warner Classics and Jazz label, was nominated for a Grammy Award and was then made into a trilogy of animated films for Channel 4.
In Classic FM’s Top 100 2010 Movie Music Chart, Debbie’s score for WILDE was voted in at number 12 by the station’s listeners. A suite of her music from the film was included in the 2007 Great British Film Music Prom concert at the Albert Hall.
As well as her composing work, Debbie appears in concert halls across the country conducting her film scores, and also appears as an expert guest on the BBC TV broadcasts of The Proms. In 2011 Debbie presented a Radio 4 programme on the composer, Joseph Horovitz, and appeared on the panel of Your Desert Island Discs at Christmas with Bill Bailey and Jo Whiley, presented by Kirsty Young. Debbie presented Scoring Father Brown for Radio 4, which followed her process of composing the score for the BBC TV series.
In 2004, Debbie was honoured in the Queen's New Year's Honours list with an MBE for services to the music and film industry. She has been awarded Honorary Fellowships at both colleges where she studied, Trinity College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Warner Classics are now thrilled to welcome Debbie to their celebrated roster of artists, and her first solo album for the label, “Piano Stories”, which features piano solo performances by the composer herself of many of her acclaimed scores, entered the UK Classical Artist Album Chart at number 10. Debbie performed tracks from the album in a solo live concert appearance at St George’s concert hall, Bristol in March 2013.
Debbie was one of the 11 composers chosen to compose music for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant on June 3rd 2012 when she conducted her movement of new “Water Music” on The Georgian barge.
In April 2014, Debbie made her debut in Classic FM's "Hall of Fame".

不过,金球奖最佳迷你剧 (2015)《狼厅》并非主讲男女情事的风月之作,它以亨利八世首席国务大臣托马斯·克伦威尔的视角,讲述了亨利八世纪治下的都铎王朝的世态百相。非贵族出身的托马斯·克伦威尔力图使英国摆脱罗马教廷的控制,从宗教国家变成一个世俗化国家,于是他帮助亨利八世与凯瑟琳离婚并迎娶安妮·博林,博得国王欢心后升任首席国务大臣。此后,他便着手为这个新型英格兰制定了整套机构,提升了新贵族和资产阶级的利益,奠定了未来大英帝国议会政治的基础。
有意思的是,在十六世纪的英国做朝臣的托马斯·克伦威尔,与清雍正年间常伴君侧的年羹尧有相似的命运。在权侵朝野之后,亨利八世对他产生了功高盖主且可以左右之的错觉,最终在1540年被处死。
唱片《狼厅Wolf Hall》的评论:
西里西亚的安杰勒斯曾说:“玫瑰是没有理由的”。惠斯勒也曾宣称:“艺术是自己发生的”。某种意义上,我并不同意这说法。如果这样的话,那么艺术家们所做的努力又算什么呢?
比如,迷住我的《狼厅Wolf Hall》配乐,我当然要感激黛比·维斯曼的创造。
博尔赫斯说过:一本书不过是万物中的一物,是存在于这个与之毫不相干的世上的所有书籍中平平常常的一册,直至找到了它的读者,找到那个能领悟其象征意义的人。于是便产生了那种被称为美的奇特的激情,这是心理学和修辞学都无法破译的那种美丽的神秘。
一张唱片也是如此,一部音乐也是如此。
黛比·维斯曼(Debbie Wiseman),一定会因为《狼厅》成功的配乐,而受到更多的赞誉和关注。此前我就并未留心过她,尽管她在英国是一位着名的音乐大使,是成功的作曲家、指挥和节目主持人。发现黛比,全是因为奇妙的《狼厅》配乐。而那部音乐,对我就像是意外之喜。它完全可以独立而成另一部经典。
《狼厅》这部剧给我留下鲜明深刻的印象。不仅是可以看到华丽的服饰布景和强大的演出阵容,马克.里朗斯、戴米恩.路易斯的精湛演技让我感觉过瘾;还有那似漫漫一出莎士比亚剧,处处折射和闪烁着的人性幽暗及光辉;更有那久久萦绕在我脑际低回宛转的配乐,那貌似舒缓、轻盈、简单地在背景之上浮现的,完全不似好莱坞影视配乐那般气势喧嚣、音效震撼、因多有雷同而感觉审美疲劳的音乐,却穿石无声的总在耳畔回响,勾连起一些剧中的场景和画面。这是少有的感觉和体验。
这足以说,这部影视的配乐之成功,那种近似于一曲难忘的“美丽的神秘”。
当看这部剧的时候,我曾有这样的疑惑。我以为《狼厅》的配乐,会更多借用都铎王朝时期的音乐元素。纵然亨利八世在位时的音乐我们不大熟悉的话,那么稍后的伊丽莎白一世时代音乐鼎盛,无论世俗音乐、宫廷音乐还是宗教音乐都不乏有才能的作曲家和作品出现,如被称为“不列颠音乐之父”的威廉·伯德,还有塔利斯、塔夫纳、道兰德……结果我却发现,《狼厅》的配乐完全出乎我想象的无视他们的存在。
这是比较不常见的。一般历史剧,多少会用一些接近古风的音乐来渲染气氛,或会借用一些当时代的作品。都铎王朝时期的音乐(尽管也算作是Early Music),是有大量作品存世的,但黛比的不同寻常之处,是她根本不取“拿来”之策,而是巧妙融合了都铎王朝时期的古乐器音色和现代的旋律风格,从而自行创作出极富迷人效果的、不落伍更不凡俗的音乐来。
在文艺复兴那个时期,乐器是和今天不同的,各种大小的维奥尔就有高、中、低音三种,低音维奥尔的音色已很似大提琴,还有琉特琴、竖笛、木管号、肖姆管(也有高、中音,后演变为现代的双簧管)、古长号、鼓,它们构成了合奏乐队。这张唱片的演奏者是伦敦的洛克里亚合奏团(Locrian Ensemble of London),不是现代的大型管弦乐团,我没有看到唱片的说明书,看不到该合奏团使用乐器的介绍,但从音色上听,使用的必定是古乐器。这可真是黛比的高明之处,她不仅使这张专辑的音乐呈现出古风十足的滋味,也更提供了丰富多样的情绪和风格。
那是与现代乐器所能带来的情绪和风格完全不同的:更多的愁绪,更多的细腻,更多的轻盈优雅。如那种低音维奥尔琴、大提琴、大管、竖笛忧郁而声音持续地演奏一条旋律,弹拨弦乐器琉特琴、鼓、羽管键琴等伴奏补充和声,构成流畅、相互交织的多声部旋律线,就有非常华丽、清晰的效果。
这张唱片的音乐创作,已是黛比与《狼厅》一片导演彼得·科斯明斯基(Peter Kosminsky)的第六次合作。黛比说,能够受邀为这样一部据优秀小说改编的、同样极为优秀的影视剧配乐,是她莫大的荣幸。她的创作灵感不仅来自充满机智和激情的原着,也来自科斯明斯基营造出的强大视觉效果和里朗斯迷人高贵的表演。整体的音乐氛围是朴素、简洁、生气勃勃的,同时又有着丰富新颖的表情和构思,我甚至觉得黛比的有些乐思简直充满玄妙。
它不是音乐爱好者们理解中的古乐,它的音乐风格和语汇非常的现代,但又非常贴合都铎王朝那个遥远年代的气息。这绝对是一张值得好好收藏和品味的唱片。
