圣女贞德（法语：Jeanne d'Arc或Jeanne la Pucelle，1412年1月6日－1431年5月30日）是法国的军事家，天主教圣人，被法国人视为民族英雄。在英法百年战争（1337年－1453年）中她带领法国军队对抗英军的入侵，最后被捕并被处决。

贞德原本是一位法国农村少女，她声称在十六岁时的一日，在村后的大树下遇见天使圣弥额尔、圣玛加利大和圣加大肋纳，从而得到“上帝的启示”，要求她带兵收复当时由英格兰人占领的法国失地。后来她几番转折，得到兵权，于1429年解奥尔良之围，成为了闻名法国的女英雄，后带兵多次打败英格兰的侵略者，更促使拥有王位承继权的查理七世于同年7月16日得以加冕。然而圣女贞德于1430年在贡比涅一次小冲突中为勃艮第公国所俘，不久为英格兰人以重金购去，由英格兰当局控制下的宗教裁判所以异端和女巫罪判处她火刑，于1431年5月30日在法国鲁昂当众处死。20年后英格兰军队被彻底逐出法国时，贞德年老的母亲说服教宗加里都斯三世（意大利文艺复兴时期着名的博吉亚家族的开创者）重新审判贞德的案子，对法兰西女英雄贞德，加里都斯三世（又译卡利克斯特三世、嘉礼三世，1378-1458）发表言论，指出“法兰西女信徒贞德是无罪的”。这是贞德英勇就义后，教廷为她作的第一次昭雪。1455年，法国人民在巴黎圣母院，为贞德举行了隆重的昭雪仪式。最终于1456年为她平反。1909年，罗马教廷册封贞德为「真福」，之后并于1920年5月16日由教皇本笃十五世封圣，册封为「圣女贞德」。每年五月的第二个星期日，被法国定为纪念贞德的全国假日。

贞德死后成为了西方文化的一个重要角色。从拿破仑到现在，法国的政治人物都曾以她的伟大形象进行宣传。主要的作家和作曲家，包括莎士比亚、伏尔泰、席勒、威尔第、柴科夫斯基、吐温、萧伯纳、布莱希特都创作过有关她的作品，而大量以她为题材的电影、戏剧、和音乐也一直持续发展直到今天。

里维特版本的电影《圣女贞德》分为“战争篇”和“监狱篇”上下两部，但并非是布列松和德莱叶版本的翻拍，也并不是根据原有传说进行编纂，而是改编了萧伯纳的同名历史剧。因此，这个版本的《圣女贞德》具有强烈舞台戏剧风格，因此如何在电影基础上嫁接舞台魅力正是里维特的情趣所在。但为了坚持作品的现实主义基调，里维特砍掉了肖伯纳原剧本的最后一幕。里维特并不像吕克贝松那样注重角色塑造，相反，他使用布莱希特的方法，通过削弱角色人性化的魅力而形成的表演上的间离效果，从而突出了角色所具有的神性一面。贞德为了她虔诚的信仰被判烧死，在火堆上她大喊“耶稣、耶稣”，影片戛然而止。

贞德请求参与这次解救奥尔良的远征，并穿上了骑士的装备，由于她没有自己的资金，她的盔甲、马匹、剑、旗帜与随从花费都是他人捐赠的。贞德的军队在1429年4月29日到达战场。历史学家Stephen W. Richey对于贞德为何能受到查理任用提出了这样的解释：“在战场一年接着一年的可耻失败，法国政府在军队和人民的领导地位上已经士气低落而名声败坏。当查理王储同意由贞德来领导他的军队并准备战争时，他很可能已经试过所有正规、理性的策略选择，然而却皆告失败；只有一个已经到达了存亡最后关头、却全然无计可施的政权，才会在绝望下去相信一个自称受到上帝指示的农村文盲女孩，让她指挥国家的军队。”

对于贞德在战场上的实际领导能力一直是历史上的争论之一，目击者声称她常常在战场上做出相当明智的决策，但士兵和将领们往往将她所获得的胜利视为是上帝的神秘力量所成就的。传统的历史学家如Edouard Perroy则推断贞德在战场上的领导作用主要是在士气上的。这些分析往往是根据后来贞德在审判上的证词，贞德声称她更注重她的军旗、而不是她的剑。最近学者在审判证词的解读上则较常指出，跟随她的军官们将她视为一个足智多谋的战术家和成功的战略家。Stephen W. Twenty years after his work on the soundtrack of Jacques Rivette's movie Jeanne la Pucelle, Jordi Savall returns to this powerful subject matter and presents a new set dedicated to the mother figure of the struggle for French independence. The music on Joan of Arc - Battles and Prisons provides the perfect atmosphere for Savall's fresh look this historical icon. Alongside works by composers from the time of Joan of Arc (Guillaume Dufay, Josquin Desprez, Johannes Vincenet, Johannes Cornago, etc.), the set also features compositions and arrangements by Jordi Savall. The biographical program of the set is further illustrated through spoken dialogue. The accompanying 500 page, six language hardbound book is richly illustrated and provides historical perspective as well as texts and translations. The result is an amazingly vivid portrait of a troubled time.

Most of the recordings of the great Catalonian viol player and group leader Jordi Savall delve into the cultural context of early music traditions. Among them is a special group referred to here as CD-books, which combine a CD (or in this case two) with a lavishly illustrated hardbound book containing essays and relevant artwork in addition to texts and the usual listings of personnel. Kudos to Savall's grant-writers for continuing to get these things funded during Spain's fiscal crisis, and this release, Jeanne d'Arc: Batailles & Prisons (Joan of Arc: Battles and Prisons) outdoes even other similar Savall releases. With the booklet weighing in at 504 pages, awesome even if it does include text in six languages, and essays covering such topics as Joan of Arc's relevance to the modern French right wing, this is not only a musical program but a survey of the entire Joan of Arc phenomenon, and one with sufficient depth to meet most people's needs.

The two actual CDs also go beyond what has been included on other Savall releases, combining several kinds of material. There is spoken-word text, both narrative and dramatic, outlining the life of Joan the Maid, to use the contemporary English term. The music itself is of different kinds, all of it impeccably performed by Savall, his vocal group La Capella Reial de Catalunya, his instrumental group Hespérion XXI, and a small group of soloists that includes the late Montserrat Figueras; this must have been one of the last few albums she made. Savall includes these kinds of pieces: popular melodies reflecting Joan's peasant origins; the Dufay motet Veni sancte spiritus (sung by three voices, symbolizing the Trinity); the ubiquitous L'homme armé tune, evoking Joan's warrior status, military and royal fanfares, and other occasional instrumental pieces. Some of the music is by Savall himself, drawn from his score for a 1993 French film about Joan of Arc. As often happens, Savall accomplishes something slightly different from what he set out to do.

The dramatic presentation has its moments, such as when French and British troops clash with their bands playing in slightly different tunings. But in general the words are less interesting than the music, which, like so much of what this musician does, gives a feeling for the resonances of Renaissance music in the lives of its original hearers like no other performances can do. This is one of Savall's most ambitious releases, and one of his very best.
