       专辑说明：
       十九世纪到二十世纪初，是西方文化与艺术大放光采的黄金时期之一、也是新旧文化观念相交冲突的大时代，许多创作者除了承袭既有的文化传统并寻找新意，也向遥远的东方寻求灵感——以中国（包括小日本）为代表的东方文化元素进入到了西方的文艺创作中。
       很多不朽之作糅合了迷人的东方、中国元素。乐迷熟悉喜爱的。有意大利作曲家普契尼以中国历史为背景、在北京城内关于公主招亲故事的歌剧《图兰朵（Turandot）》，剧中不时出现的《苿莉花》旋律、让聆者平添不少难得的亲切感。马勒更将唐诗谱进了《大地之歌》，李白、王维等诗作的韵味与意境，经由他在西方的古典音乐留下永世流传的芬芳。

　　英国近代伟大的作曲家布里顿（Benjamin Britten，1913-1976）三幕芭蕾舞剧《宝塔王子》同样也充满着东方的神奇韵味，故事讲述：
       皇帝不想把皇位传给东、西、南、北四王，反而想传给他的大女儿 Belle Epine公主，四王暴怒、但由小公主 Belle Rose 试图安抚不成。这时，有四只绿色青蛙带来了一个裴翠盒，Epine公主打不开，Rose公主轻易打开、里面却是一朵玫瑰，青蛙便邀请她到宝塔国（Pagoda Land）一游。
       Rose公主在宝塔国受到很好地款待，但当化身成火蜥蜴的宝塔王子要出现时，她却被蒙上眼睛，她想探知火蜥蜴的身份却徒劳无功、反被送回自己的国家，火蜥蜴也一路伴随。此时她的姐姐 Epine公主已成了女皇帝，并把父亲拘禁起来并要他跳舞娱乐众臣。
       Rose公主和火蜥蜴试图拯救老皇帝，于是，火蜥蜴直立并抖动它的皮肤，刹那间、皇宫全部消失了，火蜥蜴也变回宝塔王子，和 Rose公主解救了王国，使之成为充满爱和自由的国度。宝塔王子和公主双双携手共返宝塔国。

　　这出芭蕾舞剧写于一九五七年，由法国十七世纪作家蹈尔诺女士的童话故事改编，但其中也添加了从莎士比亚剧作李尔王和《美女与野兽》等带有东方趣味的神话故事的情节。
       布里顿一开始对此剧的创作充满了兴趣，但是等他开始着手谱曲后，却发现困难重重，以致一再要求顺延首演时间，前后长达两年。最后因为他在一九五五年展开世界巡回演出之旅，中途来到巴里岛停留两个礼拜，让他有机会接触到当地甘美朗音乐的优美，更让他获得创作此曲的东方色彩灵感。
       当时布里顿已经从加拿大民俗音乐学家柯林·麦可菲那里认识了甘美朗音乐的基础型态，并且也和麦可菲合作灌录了后者所改编的甘美朗音乐双钢琴曲集，布里顿且将之带回英国与钢琴家柯荣在音乐会上演出过。
       而就是这些音乐，后来全部进入了这出《宝塔王子》中，成为此剧的主体音乐风格。布里顿将他在巴里岛上听写下来的甘美朗音乐，在回英国后，一股脑地用进此剧里，并利用西方管弦乐团来捕捉甘美朗打击乐的美。结果，这份乐谱，成就了布里顿所有作品中接受度最高的一份，其轻柔的和声、具亲和力的节奏和节奏感，都让人以为是听到柯普兰或更早期印象派作曲家的作品。
       但是布里顿本人却因为此剧创作过程带给他太多的麻烦，而在完成后对此作有反感的反应。《宝塔王子》而后虽然在许多地方演出过，但一直到本片的指挥、英国指挥家奥利佛·克努森（Oliver Knussen，1952- ）在一九八八年于奥德堡音乐节上演全曲后，才重新让世人对此剧产生强烈的喜爱，也让这份历史上第一份完整的《宝塔王子》录音得以问世。
       同时，也补足了布里顿在一九五七年亲自指挥灌录的旧录音（编号：DECCA 421 855-2）的严重删节部份。本片一九九零年由 VIRGIN 出版后、即获得留声机最佳录音工程奖、企鹅唱片评鉴三星带花等国际大奖的肯定，更让克努森登上了当代顶尖指挥家之列。

       这套录音与一直名列 TAS 发烧榜的名片、布里顿亲自指挥柯芬园皇家歌剧院管弦乐团的版本（编号：DECCA 421 855-2）以及《诺亚方舟》，长久以来都是乐迷们用以测试音响器材的标准利器，早已是音响迷人手一套的经典之作。
       布里顿多彩的配器法在克努森（Oliver Knussen）手中被壮丽丰富地掌握着。然而其实这几套录音的好处，倒并不一定要在身价六七位数的音响才可以听得出来，一般的音响组合，照样可以听得嘎嘎叫。这其中的奥妙就要靠您亲身去体验了。
